Motown ripe for t-shirts
Father's Day is right around the corner, and are you still looking for the perfect gift that your Detroit sports dad will be able to mow the lawn in?

Look no further than alternativehero.com.

The relatively new Web site is brought to you by the guys responsible for the "Rebuilding Since '57" Detroit Lions T-shirts from the past few years and was featured recently on ESPN2's "First Take."

Their newest fashion offerings -- available for $18, plus shipping and handling -- include two Lions -themed shirts.

The first honors Matthew Stafford with his last name in the iconic Ford logo on the front and a list of failed Lions QBs on the back. (Subtle, no?)

The other offers an alternate logo take for the Lions , this one from the 1980s cartoon "Thundercats." (Ah, nostalgia.)

There also is an "Auburn Hills Pistons" T-shirt available for the geographically correct types.

Short game

Golf is not the most strenuous exercise, but a couple sumo wrestlers created a bit of controversy when they played two days before their upcoming wrestling tournament. According to the Mainichi Daily News, Asashoryu and Hakuho played a round 48 hours before of the start of the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament. According to the Los Angeles Times, one irate stablemaster belonging to the Japan Sumo Association said: "It's unbelievable that they played golf at a time like this. I would dismiss them if they were my disciples."

They didn't wear their traditional sumo wear, did they? Because the only visible dimples should be on golf balls.

Another round

Speaking of golf, two big-name left-handers played last week. Phil Mickelson played a round with Florida quarterback Tim Tebow. This proved advantageous for Tebow, who was allowed a few swings with Mickelson's driver. They also held a contest to see who could throw a Football farther. Said Lefty the Golfer: "He beat me by two yards. He was on his knees, though."

You can expect Mel Kiper Jr. to include that in his next draft report.

And finally

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning hopes Stafford plays regularly for the Detroit Lions this season for one very important -- and selfish -- reason: "I'm waiting for somebody to break that NFL rookie record for interceptions I set back in '98."

Manning threw 28 that season, although things got markedly better after that. What are the odds Lions fans give Stafford the same benefit of the doubt?

Reader response: From B.C. Jake: "Tiger Woods is not playing well. Isn't it about time his caddy ripped a camera off someone and threw it in a lake?"
