PATRIOTS NOTEBOOK

PATRIOTS NOTEBOOKFOXBORO - The Philadelphia Eagles cut quarterback A.J. Feeley yesterday, throwing his future in doubt. At least one person believes she has the perfect destination for him.

Heather Mitts, Feeley's wife and a star soccer player for the Boston Breakers, would like her husband to come home.

``I love Boston. If we can be in the same place, that would be ideal,'' Mitts told the Herald by phone from Philadelphia. ``It's a crazy time. We're just trying to see what's going to happen.''

The Patriots have had interest in Feeley to be their backup, though there has not been much talk between the parties recently. The Pats have just two active QBs on the roster.

Feeley spent time in the area watching his wife play at Harvard, where the Breakers play their home games from April to August.

``We'll see where he ends up,'' Mitts said. ``Whatever works out best.''

Silence golden

If you were a Patriot sitting on the roster bubble Saturday and you received a phone call, it no doubt meant you were about to be released. If your cell didn't ring, you were safe.

``I didn't get any phone calls or anything like that, so I came up here to do my job,'' said BenJarvus Green-Ellis, who made the team as the fifth running back. ``I'm always excited about the opportunity to play.''

Green-Ellis was one of a few players whose inclusion on the 53-man roster was in doubt. Another was Rob Ninkovich, the outside linebacker who was signed during camp.

``I've been released (in the past) the day after (the deadline),'' Ninkovich said. ``So I'm never 100 percent. Hopefully I make the cut and just go through the week like I'm getting prepared for a game like it was last week and the week before that.''

Simmons signs

The Patriots bolstered their offensive line depth yesterday, agreeing to terms with guard Kendall Simmons.

The 6-foot-3, 315-pound former first-round draft pick from Auburn started 81 regular-season games for the Pittsburgh Steelers. He injured an Achilles last season and missed much of the season. The team released him in February. . . .

The Jets reportedly acquired Kevin O'Connell, the Patriots' third-round pick from 2008, from the Lions for undisclosed compensation. Detroit had claimed O'Connell after the Pats waived him. This could show New York's uncertainty in backup Kellen Clemens, or the Pats' AFC East rivals could just want to pick O'Connell's brain before the teams meet in Week 2.

Back for practice

Receiver Terrence Nunn and defensive tackle Darryl Richard will be on the practice squad, sources said.

Nunn is a former Nebraska star who sat out 2008 because of lack of interest. He was one of the feel-good stories of camp, and coach Bill Belichick had said he had been ``impressive.'' Richard is a seventh-round pick from Georgia Tech.

According to NFL.com, the Patriots also have signed quarterback Isaiah Stanback.

The Patriots will announce their practice squad today. . . .

For the first time since he retired last week, the locker of veteran linebacker Tedy Bruschi was cleaned out.
